Enjoy the Fishing Platform on the Greenway

ADA Compliant Fishing Platform on the Greenway

We are pleased to announce…

Work has been completed on the two ADA Accessible fishing platforms along Luray’s award winning Greenway trail.  Persons such as disabled veterans, those with walking disabilities, and those who are not comfortable walking on uneven surfaces such as edges of the Hawksbill Creek will certainly benefit from these platforms.

The Class A fishing stream is stocked with over three tons of Rainbow and Brook trout each year.  One platform will be constructed in the corridor where the Parks and Recreation Department holds its annual youth trout fishing tournament each April, further allowing handicapped or disabled children access to the creek during this popular tournament

Site #1 is on the red section of the trail close to the park-n-ride and will be easily accessible via an easy walkway to the platform.  Site #2 is on the Orange section of the Greenway close to Oscar Sours bridge and is only a few feet from the Greenway path.

We are grateful to Racey Engineering for their design work which they have donated during a busy time for their engineering staff.  We are also grateful to turner Concrete for constructing the Piers at a greatly reduced rate.

We have received over $30,000 in donations for the platforms and we certainly want to thank all who have donated.  Donors will be identified with engraved brick pavers at the beginning of the walkway to the two platforms.

SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION

  • Since the Greenway project began more than a decade ago, many Luray citizens and businesses have worked to create this urban paradise through their donations and hard work.
  • When the Greenway was completed in 2009, The Hawksbill Greenway Foundation was formed to assist in the enhancement, long-term care, and maintenance of this treasured open green space.
  • The Board of Directors offers a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone who has planted trees and gardens, raised funds, painted murals, made a donation or contributed in a hundred other ways to creating this unique space.
  • We look forward to your continuing support and ideas for the future.
