April 22 thru April 30, 2025, the Hawksbill Greenway and Recreation Foundation, along with the Luray Parks & Recreation Department held their 3rd Annual “Clean and Green” event.

14 adults volunteered to remove trash & cigarette butts from the 2--mile Greenway Trail and the Hawksbill Creek.

6 youth and 3 adults from Luray and Page County Middle Schools that participate in JMU’s Teen Outreach Programming, also volunteered. They removed trash and weeds from Ralph Dean Recreation Park. Additionally, 3 Luray Parks & Recreation team members removed tires, trash and debris from the trees and the creek.

One-half of a full-size pickup truck bed of trash was removed at the conclusion of the 2025 “Clean and Green” event. A huge reduction from the 2 full-size truck beds of trash removed the 1st year.

The event acknowledges and celebrates Earth Day, supporting The Shenandoah and Potomac Riverkeepers “Trash Free Shenandoah” initiative. The creek is a main tributary to the Shenandoah River.

We are grateful to the many Page County environmental advocates who worked together during this event to preserve the land, creek, & wildlife habitat in Luray now and for the generations to come!
